East of England Championship.
Hot on the heels of Windsor, the next in the Championship round was today’s East of England show just outside Peterborough. Belatarr’s (somewhat!) more easterly contingent were out in action in the ring today, and young Belatarr Hercules was our star of the day.
Hercules started by winning 1st in Puppy Dog and Best Puppy Dog, maintaining his 100% record – this was his 6th such win out of the 6 Champ shows that he has so far attended. This was also Herc’s final Champ Show as a puppy and so he now graduates into Junior having been unbeaten in all his Champ show classes. His big brother Charlie Parker then took 1st in Post Graduate Dog and the brothers took their place in the Dog Challenge, with Hercules awarded an excellent Reserve Best Dog…not bad for 11 months! Once the bitch judging was complete Herc then lined up against the Best Puppy Bitch and came away with another Best Puppy in Breed award.
Many congratulations to David & Jenny for their multiple wins today and what a wonderful start Hercules has made already this year – exciting times lie ahead!
Windsor Wins.
Team Belatarr had another memorable day at the Windsor Championship where the (mostly) bright and breezy weather and huge outdoor ring made for ideal show conditions.
First up Gryphon & Billie took a turn in the Dog World Brace Class and ended up taking an excellent 3rd place out of some 20 gundog pairs entered, even winning £15 in prize money for their efforts!
Over in the breed ring young Belatarr Sculptor (Kofi) won himself another 1st place in the Puppy Dog class, and was also awarded Best Puppy Dog:
Next up was his big brother, Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie (Gryphon), who was placed 2nd in Open Dog and went on to be awarded Reserve Best Dog. This result earned Gryphon his Kennel Club Stud Book number, joining his brother, Django and sister, Billie as the third from this litter to earn their number since April of this year and that in turn means that, like them, Gryphon is now Crufts qualified for life.
His critique was:
“I love this boy’s head, it is so well furnished with dense eyebrows under which sits his almost human looking eyes with their lively & intelligent expression. It is well proportioned with a broad nose, moderate stop, slightly rounded skull & medium set thin leathers. He has a great pro-sternum, return of upper arm, level topline & moderate bend of stifle. He wears a harsh golden sand jacket with undercoat. He moves very well but could not match the performance of the winner. RBD“

Then the action heated up further as Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) beat a formidable line-up of bitches to take 1st Open Bitch and then Best Bitch. Unfortunately Windsor is one of two shows where the breed is only allocated one CC (for Best of Breed) and Billie just missed out this time around, but instead went head to head with her brother Gryphon for the single Reserve CC, which she won in great style.
The judge’s critique for her was:
“I fully understand why the KC introduced the single CC but I am not sorry that there will be no more after this year. As a judge it saddened me that I could not award the lovely best bitch the CC of which she more than deserves. Just like her brother who was RBD, she has a beautiful head & expression with the furnishings to give it a very striking & square appearance. She has strength of neck & body, is well off for bone & substance & very well muscled throughout. Her shoulders are well laid & ribs moderately sprung & carried well back. She has a nice big bum to propel her round the ring on a free & easy stride & her tail carriage is excellent. Her golden sand coat is of good texture with an undercoat. I was sorry that there was only one CC on offer & so she had to settle for BB & RCC“

Finally the Belatarr team won another Breeders Class (our 5th such win of the year) and zipped immediately over to the Breeders Group to represent the breed in front of the big audience gathered around the Best in Show ring, where we were also awarded Best Breeder in Group – cue the arrival of photographers from the Dog Press to capture the moment!
A very long, but wonderful day for everyone, with three 1st places and another Best of Sex win to add to our running total for the year!
Belatarr Boys win at Southern Counties.
Following hot on the heels of the near-underwater Bath Championship Show, the sun shined today at the Southern Counties Championship and this time it was the turn of the Belatarr Boys to take center stage.
Kicking things off Belatarr Hercules took 1st Puppy Dog, soon to be joined by his big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker who won 1st Post Graduate Dog. Then Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie (Gryphon) made it a Belatarr hat-trick by taking 1st in Limit Dog. The three brothers took their places in the Dog Challenge all were awarded with Gryphon emerging as Best Dog, Charlie Reserve Best Dog and Hercules Best Puppy Dog.
Once the bitches had been judged Gryphon then went one better and, following his previous Best Dog award at Manchester in January, he took his first Championship Best of Breed, matching his sister Billie’s achievement at Bath just 6 days earlier.
Big Belatarr wins at Bath.
The Belatarr youngsters continued their run of Championship Show successes today at Bath where the monsoon conditions failed to dampen (or, more to the point, wash away) spirits!
Three Belatarr’s were in action at the show and at 10 months and a day young Belatarr Sculptor (Kofi) was Best Puppy Dog and later won the puppy challenge to collect his first Champ Show Best Puppy award. His big brother Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie (Gryphon) was placed 2nd in Open Dog and went on to take Reserve Best Dog, whilst sister Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) was 1st Open Bitch and Best Bitch before collecting her second Champ Show Best of Breed of the year.
To round things off Billie & Gryphon then zipped off to another part of the showground where they were placed an excellent 4th out of the 19 entries in the Gundog Brace Class.

1st Special Award Junior Dog – Belatarr Sculptor
1st Limit Dog – Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie

Reserve Best Puppy in Show – Belatarr Hercules

AND

Billie also received this really sensational critique from judge Marion McAngus:
“Oh boy! This was my star & the one to take home, this is my interpretation of the Standard, I could not fault her everything, shape, coat, feet, topline, tailset, shoulders & head, moved as expected, animated, flowing & ground covering gait with strong rear driving action. She was fit & fit for function, good luck in the future & go to every show, she deserves to be made up, loved her.”
We’re just so thrilled and proud of all the babies today and delighted for Vivien, Jenny & David + MASSIVE congratulations to Irene Collier for Billie’s first CC today!
Lyra steps out + Django scores historic win!
A really fantastic weekend of shows for us – on Saturday 6 month old Belatarr Lyra got her show career off to a super start at the Plymouth Premier Show where she was placed 2nd in HWV Open, and picked up Best Puppy in Breed & Reserve Best of Breed, beaten only by her big sister Billie (Belatarr Mahalia Jackson) who was BOB.
The following day Lyra scored another Best Puppy in Breed at Central Cornwall, but the big news was made by her big brother, Django, who took Best of Breed and then went on to beat the other 16 Gundog Best of Breed’s to score another superb Gundog Group 1 win, picking up a silver goblet for Best Gundog in Show. The biggest prize of all, though, is that Django has now qualified for his Show Certificate of Merit just like his father, Mingus, and brother, Gryphon (Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie) before him. Django is only the 6th male HWV to win the ShCM and the 2 year old Gryphon & Django become only the second pair of siblings, and the first ever pair of brothers in the breed to have achieved the award!
Hercules makes his debut.
At the grand old age of 6 months and two days Belatarr Hercules had his first two shows this weekend, and managed to win at both of them!
Saturday saw him awarded 1st AVSNC Puppy and Best AVSNC Puppy (with big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker taking 1st in Post Grad and then best AVNSC Gundog) under judge Brenda Hutchison at the Litchfield Canine Society Open.
The judge’s crit for him read:
“6 months baby boy, very together for age. Gorgeous expression. Good bone, front and feet, and correct front and rear angulation. Showed and moved well.”
Then on Sunday he was awarded 1st from a 9-strong AV Puppy class at City of Cambridge & County Canine Society Open under judge Russell Mosedale, whose super critque was:
“Wow, what a lovely boy, lots of promise, good head with correct skull shape & eye, good reach of neck leading into well placed shoulders, lovely forechest, well off for bone, tight feet, good length of back, moderate bend of stifle, well muscled for age, moved with drive”
This second show was also heavingly busy, crowded & noisy but young Herc took it all in his stride and rose to the occasion in grand style.
Many congratulations to Jenny & David for making such a wonderful start for Hercules – we are certain that there will be many more wins to come!
Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie – Best Dog at Manchester Championship.
In another super Championship outing for the Big Belatarr Babies, Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie (Gryphon) took 1st Post Graduate Dog, with his brother Charlie Parker 2nd, before going on to be awarded Best Dog under judge Editha Newton.
Her critique for him was:
“I liked his balance of angles both fore & aft which helped him to stand foursquare with correct topline. Lovely neck & shoulder with good depth of chest. Lovely straight hock.”
Following wins at LKA and Boston this makes three Champ Shows in a row where Belatarr babies have taken Best Dog or Best Bitch, with a different sibling winning each time, which is particularly pleasing.
Not wishing to be left behind, a little later on Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) stepped out into what was only her second Champ Show Open Bitch class and was awarded 2nd from a classy entry of 10 Open Bitches. Many congratulations to all, once again!
Belatarr Mahalia Jackson Best Bitch at LKA
Ending what has been a terrific year in suitably terrific style Billie, Belatarr Mahalia Jackson, took 1st in Post Graduate Bitch at the LKA Championship, and then went on to be awarded Best Bitch and Reserve Best of Breed under judge Mick Howes.
His super critique for her read:
“A real showgirl with class & style. She did not put a foot wrong. With overall soundness & balance, this bitch has an eye catching outline. Shown in good coat & presented in lovely condition. She has a very pretty head with good earset & correct eye, strong neck & lay back of shoulder, plenty of fore chest with straight front good pastern. Plenty of depth with spring to rib, excellent tailset. She has good muscle tone which showed in her movement which was steady with drive & extension keeping her topline & using her tail. Well deserving of Best Bitch”
