Belatarr at Crufts 2015
A brief day off from puppy duties saw a terrific and very memorable (historic, even!) day for us at Crufts 2015. Belatarr was one of only 6 Gundog kennels to qualify for the final of what was to be the last ever Kennel Club Breeders Competition. It was a great honour to be invited to take our place in front of a big crowd in the Crufts main arena today, where we were very proud to represent the breed alongside over 200 other dogs from all of the other groups.
The Breeders Competition was in the evening, but prior to that came the breed judging, and the Belatarr boys really did us proud today too. Young Belatarr Hercules was now just out of Junior and in his very first Post Graduate Dog class, where he was placed 3rd out of an entry of 10 – a very nice result which also automatically qualifies him for Crufts 2016.
His big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker was unquestionably the star of the day though, and we were thrilled, and delighted for Jenny and David, to see Charlie awarded 1st Limit Dog from a very classy line up of males.
Billie, Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM, was the third member of our Breeders Team today, and she didn’t go home empty handed, picking up Reserve in another very high quality Open Bitch Class.
Puppy Portraits – week 3
Huge changes in the pups this last week – they can now see, hear and bark/growl/chirrup (in a comically squeaky way) and have started playing and interacting with one another and with their environment. Nails have been filed twice more and they have quadrupled their birth weight in just 21 days. Phoenix has been producing vast quantities of milk so weaning has not been started as yet, but the little’un’s will get their first taste of solid food this weekend – much mess and mayhem is sure to ensue!
THE BOYS
THE GIRLS
Puppy Portraits – week 2.
The pups continue to thrive and gain weight very nicely and evenly. Day 14 saw Miss Green and then Miss Yellow open their eyes, by the following day, which is when these head-shots were taken, all of their other siblings were starting to open their eyes too.
THE BOYS
THE GIRLS
Pup Portraits – week 1
It’s been a hectic and sleep-deprived 7 days but all the new boys and girls have thrived and all have doubled their body weight in their first week of life. So we can now start our traditional weekly portrait gallery and let everyone meet and then follow the growth, development and changes in each of the 10 pups over the coming weeks:
THE BOYS
THE GIRLS
And finally some “action” shots from the week – when not feeding then the main/only action when you’re only a week old and can’t see, hear or walk is snoozing, of course!
The Gang’s All Here!
We’re absolutely delighted to announce the safe arrival of Phoenix’ final litter:
Yesterday was a very long and exhausting all-night-and-most-of-the-next-day whelping, but all 10 pups eventually arrived vigorous and squeaking and all suckled strongly immediately, so now, 24hrs later, we are very proud to be able to introduce Belatarr 3.0 to the world: 6 new Belatarr girls – Miss Yellow, Miss Orange, Miss Pink, Miss Green, Miss Purple and Miss Mint, and 4 new Belatarr boys – Mr Red, Mr Black, Mr Blue and Mr. Bronze.
As with Phoenix’ previous litters we have split the puppies into two groups and are hand-attaching them to feed around the clock to ensure that everyone gets their share of milk, so whilst one group feeds the others wait their turn, gently snoozing under the heat lamp. Phoenix is recovering well and sleeping a lot today, but is proving again to be the most wonderful, careful, conscientious and attentive mother. So now the fun begins!
Belatarr: the Next Generation.
We’re delighted to be able to announce that Phoenix, the Top HWV Brood Bitch of 2014, has been confirmed in pup with what will be her final litter:
For this very special litter we have chosen Fürdöházi Álnok of Amiryck (Cézár) as the sire.
Cézár is a super example of the breed. He displays the correct, harsh wire coat, has a loving, outgoing, confident and friendly temperament and is very well constructed throughout with an excellent head. He derives from similar lines to our own boy Mingus but also has some of the same physical characteristics as Phoenix, so we hope that they will compliment one another and make for a good match and we excitedly await the outcome. Both parents are HUU tested and the puppies from this litter will not be affected by the Urate Stone disorder. Thanks go to Karen & Richard of Amiryck for giving us the opportunity of using Cézár.
Pups are expected to arrive around 3rd Feb. They will be suitable for show, working and pet homes. If you would like to be considered for inclusion on our list for this exciting new generation of Belatarr HWV’s or you would like to discuss the litter in more detail then please do contact us at: renfromail@aol.com with details of the home and lifestyle that you could offer a Belatarr pup.
Belatarr makes breed history at Boston Championship!
A truly incredible start to the year for team Belatarr with brother & sister taking both Best Dog and Best Bitch today at the Boston Championship Show under judge Jill Peak. Belatarr Charlie Parker was awarded Best Dog and Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM (Billie) took Best Bitch & then won Best of Breed with Charlie Reserve Best of Breed.
Many, many hours later Billie then thrilled us beyond measure when she also won the Gundog Group under judge Aidine Howes – the first and only time EVER that a Wirehaired Vizsla has been awarded Best Gundog at a General Championship show and so the highest show level reached by any HWV in the UK.
We are just so unbelievably proud of Irene & Billie’s historic win and this first for the breed! 🙂
The judge’s glowing critiques for Billie were:
“I was so pleased with the beautiful dogs in this group.
.. my choice for G1 was Belatarr Mahalia Jackson, W/h Vizsla, I was looking for a winner who not only possessed the correct structure but was also sound on the move with good ring presence – this bitch fitted the bill & in addition she was presented in excellent body & muscular condition with a correct wire coat which gave beautiful face furnishings & covered her whole body from the tip of her nose to the tip of her toes. She did not put a foot wrong with her true & steady movement, I feel privileged to have been told afterwards this has given this breed its first group winner.“
Aidine Howes
“3 years old bitch excels in breed type, shown in good coat & condition. lovely head well balanced, good neck & shoulders, good bone, legs & feet, lovely body & balance, good quarters & set on, moved well both ways with reach & drive maintaining her topline. BB & BOB, was delighted to see her take G1 in a strong gundog group.“

Belatarr wins Top HWV Kennel, Stud Dog & Brood Bitch for 2014!
It’s been a roller-coaster of a year, but at the end of it all we’re immensely proud to say that OurDogs have informed us that Belatarr has been awarded the Arden Grange Top HWV Kennel for 2014.
In addition Tarndair Phoenix of Belatarr is the winner of the Dog World/Yumega Top Brood Bitch for 2014 and Mingus, Morehays Lars of Belatarr ShCM, is the Top HWV Stud Dog for 2014.
These awards are a great testament to everyone’s hard work in and out of the ring this year, and the pinnacle of our achievements as a still very young kennel.
Wishing everyone a very happy and successful 2015! 🙂
Belatarr Boys at Midland Counties Championship
A great day for the boys at the Midland Counties Championship show today, presided over by judge and long-time breed expert, Lindsey Townsend. There was an excellent entry and a lovely, happy atmosphere both in and out of the ring and Belatarr Hercules continued his unbroken run of Championship class wins, taking 1st in Junior Dog. His big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker then went one better, taking 1st in Post Graduate Dog and then, against extremely tough competition, was also awarded Reserve Best Dog.
Welsh double wins for Billie.
Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) continued her fabulous year by taking 1st Open Bitch and Best Bitch at both of this weeks two Championship Shows. Firstly renowned judge Pam Blay awarded her at the weekend’s South Wales Kennel Association Championship Show, and also rewarded her with this wonderful, memerable critique:
“This cracking bitch has come on so much since I judged her last. She is now the finished picture of a typical Wirehaired Vizsla, she has the stance, bone & outlook needed for this breed. She is so balanced that she couldn’t put a foot wrong, she has substance but maintains her femininity, in excellent coat of the correct texture with undercoat, feminine head & expression with a lovely eye & pigment, excellent neck & shoulders with a lovely depth of chest, in hard muscular condition which showed in her excellent, precise movement. Delighted with her progress, no hesitation in making her BB.”
Pam Blay
Just four days later Billie beat a classy line up of HWV bitches at the Gundog Society of Wales Championship Show to be awarded Best Bitch once again, this time under judge Jill Peak.
These two wins now give Billie 6 Championship Best of Sex wins for the year, and all before the age of 3!
