Belatarr Reunion.
This last weekend saw the gathering of the clan as we hosted our 3rd Belatarr reunion. After weeks of daily rain we were incredibly lucky and blessed with unbroken summer sunshine for the entire afternoon. 20 Belatarr Wires were present, together with special guests Oz and Bertie the Labs, Molly the Golden and teeny-tiny Frankie the “Shorkie”. Needless to say much wiry romping in and out of the river and around the garden ensued and it was wonderful, as ever, to see our babies all grown-up and very much enjoying life to the full!
Many many thanks to everyone who came to the day and who braved the holiday traffic travelling back and forth to us in Devon – we couldn’t do it without you all – and particular thanks to Sarah for fulfilling the role of official photographer for the day and for supplying all of these great pics. 🙂
Great weekend for Herc.
An absolutely superb weekend in the show ring(s) for Belatarr Hercules – Saturday saw him take 1st Open HWV and Best of Breed under Gundog judge Garry Golder before being awarded Group 3 in a very large Gundog Group under judge Mr L. Chambers, who also gave Herc’s big brother Charlie Parker 1st Open AV Gundog in another very large class.
The following day was the Southern Counties Championship and Herc scored again, taking 1st Limit Dog and then beating his older brother (amongst others) to be awarded Best Dog under judge Rob Suchett-Kaye:
North – Top Puppy of the year.
Young Belatarr North by Northwest had a tremendously successful first year in the show ring, the highlight of which was undoubtedly his Puppy Group 2 placing at the South Wales Kennel Association Championship.
We were absolutely delighted to hear this week that North is the HWVA top scoring Dog Puppy of 2015, winning the Leiborschy Tankard, and, like his mother Phoenix before him, he was also awarded Top Show Puppy of the year for 2015, wining him the Leiborschy Flask at the HWVA Annual Awards.
Billie was also 2nd highest scoring show bitch of 2015, with her brother Charlie 3rd highest scoring show dog of the year – great acknowledgment for everyone’s hard work and top results through the year!
Billie goes BEST IN SHOW at the HWVA Championship…again!
A simply amazing day for Belatarr at yesterday’s HWVA Championship – the biggest annual gathering of the breed anywhere in the world:
Junior Dog
1st – Belatarr Vertigo
2nd – Belatarr North By Northwest
“1. Ryan’s Belatarr Vertigo, won by a head! Loved his classic head & expression with a lovely eye & well set & carried ears, good neck & shoulders, lovely profile movement really using his sound hindquarters & well made forequarters, he is balanced & a lovely type, a good size, well boned, excellent coat in tip-top condition with lovely muscletone; 2. Collier’s Belatarr North By Northwest, well boned & bodied youngster who still has his puppy head on! Correct neck & shoulders, still has his old jacket on but his new coat is coming through, lovely topline & tailset, he is balanced with good muscletone but oh what a handful for his owner, when he settles, nothing should stop him. Today beaten by his brother, I reckon these two will have many a battle in the future.“
Graduate Dog & Special Working Dog
1st – Belatarr Sculptor
“Not quite the head I was looking for but his overall balance & free movement took the class, good coloured & correct shaped eye, good earset & carriage, in lovely coat & condition, he is well muscled with the correct hindquarters, topline & tailset, good neck & strong forequarters, steady up & back but excellent head carriage & tailset carriage in profile.“
Limit Dog
1st – Belatarr Hercules
“Very balanced dog of a lovely type, excellent masculine head & expression, good neck & shoulders, good forechest, lovely topline & tailset, good depth of chest, in excellent coat & condition with a well muscled hindquarters, he is quality, he kept a strong topline set up & moving & his profile movement was a joy to see, showed well to win a good class.”
Open Dog
1st – Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM
Junior Bitch
1st – Belatarr Thirtynine Steps
“No wonder I wrote nice type, it is yet another littermate to the JD 1 & 2! Feminine head & expression with a lovely eye, good neck & shoulders, lovely topline & tailset, she is balanced of a good size & outline, nice depth of chest, moved soundly on well boned legs & feet, well muscled hindquarters, excellent coat of the correct texture.“
Open Bitch
1st – Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM
Best Bitch CC – Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM
BEST IN SHOW – Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM
“I make no secret of the fact that I have liked this bitch before. This is the third time I judged her, first time she wasn’t ready, second time she was the best bitch but boy look at her now! Now the finished package and am very surprised that she is still wanting her third CC. So very feminine in outline & outlook, such a pretty head & expression, I love her type, she is balanced & quality & is everything I want in a Hungarian Wirehaired bitch. She moved so true on well boned legs & feet, excellent neck & shoulders, strong topline & well set tail, good depth of chest, moved with ease & style covering the ground with an excellent head carriage & tailset, the bonus is that she has an excellent coat of the correct harshness & a beard, not an overlarge one, as I am know to prefer less, but just enough for perfection, her muscletone just gleamed on a sunny day, even though we were inside, when the sun caught her going round in profile, it completed the picture. Thrilled to give her the CC & BIS“
Pam Blay
Absolutely thrilled for Vivien, Marie, Jenny & David and particularly Irene for Billie’s 2nd CC – Billie is also the only dog ever to have twice won Best in Show at the HWVA Champ Show!
Thank you so very much to judge Pam Blay for thinking so highly of the Belatarr clan – it means the world to us – these results are all I could ever have wished for, and make me so proud of everyone’s achievements – more pics to follow!
Great wins for the Boys.
Jenny & David had another very busy but very rewarding day with their boys, brothers Belatarr Charlie Parker & Belatarr Hercules at the Mid Herts Gundog Club Open Show. Judge Lynda Adams awarded Herc 1st Post Graduate and Charlie 1st Open but this time Herc beat his brother (for the first time!) to take Best of Breed with Charlie awarded Reserve Best of Breed.
That proved to be just the beginning, though, as Charlie was then eligible to enter the Reserve Best of Breed Stakes class where judge David Hutchison awarded him a fabulous 1st place, ahead of all of the other Gundog RBOB’s from the day.
Later still both boys entered the Brace Class where they were once again placed 1st, this time under judge Maureen Justice – meaning that the boys have still NEVER been beaten in any Brace class at Championship or Open level – an incredible achievement!
Charlie’s winning weekend.
Jenny & David spent their whole weekend showing their boys, Belatarr Charlie Parker & Belatarr Hercules but it all well was worth it!
Birmingham District Gundog and Terrier Club saw Charlie awarded BOB under Donna Kirkwood-Emery and then Group 4 under Vizsla specialist John Thirlwell. The next day at Hitchin District Canine Society he was once again awarded BOB and then went on to pick up Group 2 from a huge group of 21 Gundog Best of Breeds presided over by judge under Ian Sparham – Jenny reports that he was: “showing his socks off both days, gorgeous boy.”
We’re so proud of Charlie, who just gets better and better with maturity. This terrific weekend was just desserts for all the hard work and dedication that Jenny & David have put into him and puts Charlie within a whisker (or maybe a wiry beard?!) of achieving his Kennel Club Show Certificate of Merit….watch this space!
North Star shines in Wales!
A sensational day for 8 month-old Belatarr North by Northwest at yesterday’s South Wales Kennel Association Championship where he and Irene were first awarded Best Puppy dog and then Best Puppy in breed by judge Colin Woodward:
A good few hours later North & Irene also took a fantastic Gundog Puppy Group 2 under judge Terence Balfour-Burgess – one of the highest awards ever achieved by any HWV puppy in the UK.
Not one for resting on his laurels just 3 days after his Group placing young North had another great day at the Gundog Society of Wales Championship Show. Here he was awarded 1st Puppy, Best Puppy in Breed and a terrific Reserve Best Dog, under breed judge Ed Casey, for which he received this superb critique:
“Up to size 10 month old dog puppy but cannot be denied for his excellent outline, correct angulation & pleasing head properties. Pleases for head shape, moderate stop, good eye colour, enough furnishings. Strong neck, well angulated front, good forechest, strong bone & excellent feet. Strong level topline, ribbed well back, pleasing quarters, short hocks well let down. Very good up & back & moved out freely in profile. Coat of good texture, could be darker but this did not detract, should have a great future. RBD & BP“
Ed Casey
We’re just thrilled by this super-joyful, happy boy who just loves everything that he does (in any out of the ring!) and never fails to make everyone smile. Many congratulations to Irene for her second huge Champ show Group award of 2015 too!!
Richmond & Darlington Championships: more wins for Billie.
The Richmond Championship Show proved to be another great day in the ring for Billie, Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM, where judge Marion Waddell awarded her 1st Open Bitch and then Best of Breed (her second Champ Show BOB in a week) which allowed her to once again represent the breed alongside the 26 other Gundog BOB’s in the the Gundog Group:
The judges critique was:
“Robustly built bitch with a strong frame which is constructed well, strong developed chest down to elbows, which are well tucked in, moderately broad skull with oval eye, strong in neck, well ribbed body reaching back to well developed thighs which showed in her driving ground covering gait.“
MARION M WADDELL
A week later, and despite feeling distinctly under the weather, Billie managed to continue her fantastic form by winning her third Champ Show Open Bitch class in a row, this time at the Darlington Championship, where she was in a class comprised entirely of CC winners & Show Champions, under judge Gordon Haran:
Belatarr Birmingham Big Treble!
A truly amazing day for us at the Birmingham Championship show, presided over by judge and Gundog expert Di Arrowsmith – Belatarr took a record-breaking Best Dog, Best Bitch AND Best Puppy:
“A very happy baby, up to size already he excelled in skull proportions, forehand angulation, topline & hindquarters. Very balanced on the move for one so young. BP.”
Di Arrowsmith
“Loved this boy. Typical all through & just as the Standard states, robust & stronger boned than its cousin the smooth Vizsla. He excelled in coat, head & expression, leathers & clean neck. Sound front & on good well padded feet, ideal angles fore & aft, firm topline held throughout the class. Best on the move in this class. A very worthy Best Dog.”
Di Arrowsmith
“Substance, bone, type & quality. A grand bitch who I later learned is sister to my BD. She has all his qualities, head planes, eye, expression, leathers, front & feet, heartroom, angles fore & aft & a firm topline in between. In good coat & very good on the move. BB & BOB”
Di Arrowsmith
As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day North’s sister Ethel, Belatarr To Catch A Thief, also made her (and her handlers!) show debut and was rewarded with an excellent 2nd Puppy Bitch, which also immediately qualified her for Crufts 2016 – Many congratulations!
Immediately following the Champ Show the HWVA hosted it’s annual Open show (in the same ring as the Champ Show classes) and the Belatarr Boys collected another three 1st places, with North taking 1st Minor Puppy Dog, Best Puppy Dog and Best Puppy in Show, whilst his big brother Hercules was awarded 1st Post Graduate Dog and Charlie was 1st Limit Dog. Their brother Kofi took second in Graduate Dog and baby Sabi was a close 2nd to his litter brother North in Minor Puppy Dog, all under judge and long-time breed expert Diane Parry.
Phew!
Belatarr at Bournemouth.
A super day for the Belatarr babies at the Bournemouth Championship Show… The heat was often stifling, but 4 Belatarr dogs from 3 generations of Phoenix’ puppies took to the ring today, and judge and breed specialist Karen Richardson did us proud.
Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM (Billie) was awarded 1st Open Bitch and went on to take Best Bitch, as she had previously done at the same show in 2014.
Her younger brother Belatarr Scluptor (Kofi) was 1st Post Graduate Dog and went on to take at excellent Reserve Best Dog, whilst, very excitingly, it was also the show debut of two of the newest generation of Belatarr puppies – the Hitchcock litter – as Belatarr North By Northwest (North) and his brother Belatarr Vertigo (Sabi) took to the ring at just 6 months and 2 days of age. Both boys looked terrific and though the heat made concentration and focusing very difficult indeed for them, they both acquitted themselves very well and both managed to qualify for Crufts 2016. Thrilled to have been there to see (and, in Sabi’s case, move) them in the ring 🙂
