Richmond Championship Show.

Richmond Championship Show has always been a special show for Belatarr and we have enjoyed some memorable wins here over the past few years. 2018 proved to be no exception and the Belatarr boys enjoyed a superb morning under the UK’s most highly qualified Show Judge, Zena Thorne-Andrews, with Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules winning Best Dog and collecting his first CC of the year, and his4th CC in total:

Lovely to go over, his front is well under the body and supporting his weight properly. Maybe a little thick in back skull. Nicely set ears, sound legs and thick feet, Excellent body and quarters, he travels over the ground smoothly and easily.

Zena Thorn-Andrews

With his brother, Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM close on his heels as he is awarded his 7th Reserve Dog CC:

Res CC. I did like his quality head and outlook. Close up in all respects with moderate angulation & excellent coat. Just has a tendency to rise a little too much over rump. His construction is as above (i.e. as in his brother), very good indeed.

National Gundog Championship

What was an extremely hot and sunny day at this year’s National Gundog Championship proved also to be a memorable one for Belatarr. Presided over by Breed specialist judge Christine Morgan, young sisters Iris (Belatarr Venus) and Dora (Belatarr Pandora) met in the ring for only the second time, with Dora joining her sister today in qualifying for Crufts, whilst their brother Luka (Belatarr Jupiter) represented their litter in Junior Dog.

Belatarr Pandora stacked in the ring.

Belatarr Venus on the move in Junior Bitch.

The highlight of the day, though, was Billie (Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM) who won Best Bitch and was so awarded her third CC of the year and her 9th overall – an amazing achievement, matched by only 1 other bitch and two dogs in HWV breed history. We continue to be thrilled and so proud of her achievements – massive congratulations to Irene on this latest milestone for the record-breaking girl from our very first litter!

SH CH BELATARR MAHALIA JACKSON SHCM (MS I E COLLIER) I judged this lovely girl some years ago when there was only one CC on offer. On that occasion she was Best Bitch but had to settle for the Res CC as the dog was BOB. The next time I judged her was indoors when I felt that she was not as animated as she could have been. I have always thought that she was an outdoor girl and today she proved it, powering round the ring with reach and drive and holding her head high with a topline that was straight and true and perfect tail carriage. She is so feminine and noble in appearance yet has power and strength, a wonderfully balanced outline, depth, ample spring of rib and wide well muscled quarters. She is so true in front and from behind you can see the flair over her hips giving perfect balance to her ribcage. Her head is beautiful and her eyes tell you what a kind soul she is. And of course, she has an excellent wire coat and facial furnishings. It was my absolute pleasure to give her the CC at last!”

Manchester Championship Triple!

A fabulous result and a perfect start to the year at the (snow-and-mud-bound) Manchester Championship Show, where team Belatarr collected three of the four top awards under the highly experienced European judge Henric Fryckstrand.

In the dog classes half-brothers, Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules and Belatarr North by Northwest ShCM were placed first and second, respectively, in Open dog with Herc going on to be awarded Best Dog for an amazing THIRD YEAR IN A ROW! at Manchester, with baby brother North declared Reserve Best Dog:

“1. Spillane’s Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules. Powerful male with correct amount of substance and animated flowing movement. Masculine head, nice expression, lovely eyes, well-muscled neck, good chest and ribs, level back, great rear, perfect coat texture and well presented Best Dog.

2. Collier’s Belatarr North By Northwest ShCM. Attractive masculine male with many good points, pleasing head and expression, strong neck, excellent chest and plenty of heartroom, short level back, excellent rear angulations, good coat, moves well. Res Best Dog.”

Henric Fryckstrand

Then, in the bitch classes, young Belatarr Pandora picked up 1st Junior Bitch at what was only her and owner Zoe’s 2nd ever Champ Show, earning themselves a qualification for Crufts 2018 in the process, whilst big sister Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson was 1st in Open Bitch, Best Bitch and then pipped her full-brother Hercules to take Best of Breed and go on to represent the breed in the Gundog Group later that afternoon:

What a cracking girl who just took my eye and oozes quality. So well balanced with all the required breed details from the nose to the tip of the tail. excellent head with intelligent expression, lovely arched neck into good shoulders, nice chest and perfect substance, strong level topline, excellent hind angulations. correct coat texture. Movement ground covering and stylish. When reading the catalogue later I realized BOB and BOS were siblings and the Res Dog was a half-brother, BOB.

Henric Fryckstrand

An immensely proud moment to watch them all in the ring today, and huge congratulations, as ever, for everyone’s wonderful results!

More Puppy Group Placings!

Although still only 6 months old, the new Belatarr generation are certainly making their mark out in the show rings already.

Hot on the heels of his two PG4 placings, Belatarr Jupiter (Luka) went two better at his next outing, the Birmingham & District Gundog & Terrier Club Open, where HPR specialist judge Maxine Munday awarded his 1st in HWV Puppy Class followed by Best Puppy in Breed. The subsequent Puppy Group was judged by Kathy Gorman and she awarded him a fantastic Group 2 Placing, with the critique:

This was an outstanding group of puppies. 2. Spillane’s Belatarr Jupiter. HWV. A lovely example of the breed, very well constructed and moved soundly with drive.

Kathy Gorman

Not to be outdone by her brother, Luka’s litter-sister Belatarr Pandora (Dora) also scored a great result at Blackwood & District Canine Society, where Judge Sheila Appleby awarded her 1st in AVNSC Graduate, Best AVNSC Puppy and then Puppy Group 4. This was a terrific achievement for Dora and Zoe as together they are learning how to show for the first time ever. Their critiques from the show were a real testament to all of their hard work:

“1. 7-month puppy bitch, with lovely head, soft expressive hazel eyes, well-balanced overall with good proportions. In good coat, moved effortlessly, covering the ground well. Two lovely puppies but preferred movement of one.”

Group 4: Very pretty bitch puppy with sweetest of expressions, balanced in proportions, outgoing on the move, nicely handled.”

Belatarr wins the SWKA Championship Double

A fantastic day for Belatarr at the South Wales Kennel Association Championship show under breed specialist judge, Bev Smith: Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson was awarded Best Bitch whilst her baby brother Belatarr North by Northwest took Best Dog and was then awarded Best of Breed – making a second time that Belatarr has now won the “Championship Double”.

This was the first ever Champ Show BOB for North, following on from his first Best Dog CC back at National Gundog in August. SWKA is a special event for North too, since he was awarded a sensational Gundog Puppy Group 2 win at the same show exactly 2 years ago to the day!

Huge congratulations to Irene for her fabulous double-win.

The critique for North’s BOB was:

This dog has that je ne sais quoi. He oozes character from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Super head and expression with a soft but intelligent look. Lovely eye shape and colour. Plenty of furnishings giving his head that really striking square appearance in profile. Strong neck of moderate length and slightly arched. Good depth and width of chest giving plenty of heart room. Lovely moderate angulation front and rear. Lovely harsh jacket and shown in good hard condition. Although top size for the breed everything is in proportion as it should be. Excellent outline when stacked and he didn’t disappoint on the move. Foot perfect he flowed with ease around the ring with ground covering movement. When coming towards and away he was straight and true. I was pleased to award him BD & BOB today.

Championship Show Roundup.

In between all the puppy shenanigans back here at HQ team Belatarr have been enjoying a terrific run at the last three Championship shows.

The Scottish Kennel Club Championship, under judge Anne Moss,  brought  a 5th CC for Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM (Billie) as she was named Best Bitch, and, having just moved up to Limit classes, young Belatarr North By Northwest was rewarded with Reserve Dog CC too. This win makes Billie the second highest awarded bitch in breed history, an incredible achievement, whilst North gained his KC Stud Book number with his RCC, another great milestone for him and Irene.

The following weekend saw the Bath Championship, presided over by judge Blake Crocker, where Billie and North both had a repeat of the same results that they achieved in Scotland, with Billie named Best Bitch and North Reserve Best Dog:

Next up was the Southern Counties Championship, under judge Betty Smith, and this time it was the boys time to triumph, with Belatarr winning all of the top three male classes – Belatarr Vertigo (Sabi) was 1st in a tough Post Graduate class, Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM placed 1st in Limit Dog and Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules took 1st in Open Dog, before going on to be awarded Best Dog and then Best Of Breed. This was a particularly impressive achievement for Herc as, on the way to be named Best of Breed, he needed to beat all 3 of the highest awarded bitches in breed history (including his own older sister, Billie!) who, unusually, were all entered and present in the ring on the day.

Huge congratulations to Jenny, David, Irene and Vivien on all of their achievements with their Belatarr girls and boys, and I’m very much looking forward to joining you all back on teh show circuit once puppy duties have been completed!

Belatarr Boys score at the HWVA Championship.

In the midst of all the new puppy shenanigans this last Sunday was the annual Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Association Championship, always the largest gathering of the breed to take place anywhere in the world. Although we were unable to attend,  due to the considerable demands of our twelve new arrivals, the 5 Belatarr boys who did get to the show managed to score a remarkable clean sweep of all of the top 4 dog classes, as follows:

Graduate Dog: 1st – Belatarr Vertigo

Post Graduate Dog: 1st Belatarr Sculptor

Limit Dog: 1st Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM & 2nd Belatarr North By NorthWest

Open Dog + Reserve Best Dog: 1st Sh CH Belatarr Hercules

1st Spillane’s Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules. Quality dog of lovely type with well made & balanced construction. Interesting to see he has the same mother as my Grad, Post Grad & 1 & 2 in Limit. All with similar qualities & type the sign of an excellent brood bitch. This dog presented a good flowing outline of maturity & was presented in 1 class coat & condition. When moved he covered the ground with ease. RCC.

John Thirlwell

Many congratulations to everyone and we’re looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Hercules the Champion!

Midland Counties Championship proved to be a truly fantastic and memorable show, particularly for young Belatarr Hercules.

Having moved up into Open Dog for the first time during summer Herc has never been beaten at any of the Championship shows that he has attended, so the stakes were quite high going into Midland Counties.

Following his 1st CC (from Three Counties, in June) and his 2nd CC (from Richmond, just last month) we didn’t truly expect him to win a third CC so very soon, but he performed to his usual impeccable standard and we were absolutely thrilled when judge Valerie Foss awarded him 1st in Open Dog and then that all-important 3rd Best Dog Challenge Certificate – Belatarr’s 2nd Champion in 3 months!

Huge congratulations go to Jenny & David for all of their hard work and persistence as well as their constant eagerness to learn and desire to continually improve. Successful dog showing is an equal mixture of having the best dog and being able to show that dog to best advantage and Jenny & Hercules have grown together into a hugely impressive and harmonious team. We shall forever be grateful that they have truly developed Herc to his full potential from that very exciting puppy that we picked out at 7 week of age, as well as providing Herc & his brother Charlie with such a wonderful, loving and stimulating home.
