Charlie Parker makes breed history at Windsor.
We’re absolutely thrilled to be able to report that Belatarr Charlie Parker earned his stud book number by being awarded 1st Limit Dog and then taking the Reserve Dog Challenge Certificate at the Windsor Championship show today, under judge Chris Atkinson.
This means that all 4 show dogs from Phoenix & Mingus’ first litter have now earned their SB numbers, the first and only set of siblings in the breed ever to have achieved this important accolade. Charlie will now join his younger brother (and housemate!) Belatarr Hercules in the Kennel Club registry and, as a result, is also now qualified for Crufts for life.
Many congratulations to Jenny & David on scoring this great achievement for both of their lovely boys within the last few months.
Champ Show roundup!
As the newest Belatarr puppies settle into their new homes the older generations continue to win at this Spring’s Championships with lovely results from The National Dog Show, Bath and Southern Counties.
At the National Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM (Billie) was placed 1st from an entry of 9 in Open Bitch and then went on to take her 3rd RCC ticket under judge David Alcorn. His critique for her was:
“Shapely bitch & well angled at both ends. Liked very much her head proportions & balance. Great front assembly & strong bone. Excellent depth to brisket & well sprung ribs. Well angled hindquarter with good muscletone. Stands on very good feet & moves soundly, covers plenty of ground. Her many attributes & overall soundness earned her the RCC today.”
Meanwhile at Bath, under judge Fran Harper, Billie was again awarded Reserve Best Bitch, whilst it was the boys turn to shine at Southern Counties where Belatarr Hercules took 1st in Post Graduate Dog with his brother Belatarr Sculptor 2nd in the same class, whilst their older brother Belatarr Charlie Parker went one better and won Reserve Best Dog under judge Christine Ryan.
Belatarr Boys win at HWVA Championship!
A fabulous sunny day brought some equally fabulous and memorable results for Jenny & David’s Belatarr boys today at the world’s biggest gathering of HWV’s at the HWVA Championship, presided over by gundog and breed specialist Sharon Pinkerton.
First up was Belatarr Hercules who was placed 1st in Yearling Dog, followed, a few classes later, by his big brother Belatarr Chalies Parker who was also placed 1st (from an entry of 7) in Limit Dog.
The two boys then went head to head in the Dog Challenge line-up and Jenny (and we!) were absolutely thrilled when Herc was awarded the Reserve Dog CC, gaining him his Stud Book number and qualifying him for Crufts for life, all at the tender age of just 20 months!
The critiques for the tow boys were:
BELATARR HERCULES
“Masculine dog with a lovely typical quality head, super expression, strong muzzle, strong neck of good length, lovely bones legs and good feet, super well sprung ribs, strong loins, correct topline, very good hindquarters including width of second thigh, excellent coat, moved really well covering the ground – delighted to,award him the RCC”
BELATARR CHARLIE PARKER
“Lovely headed dog with a kind expression from dark eyes, strong neck, clean shoulders but a little forward placed, lovely boned legs, very good ribs, strong topline, very good angulation behind, moved well.”
Sharon Pinkerton
Many congratulations to Jenny and David for such a great achievement with their super boys.
Belatarr at Crufts 2015
A brief day off from puppy duties saw a terrific and very memorable (historic, even!) day for us at Crufts 2015. Belatarr was one of only 6 Gundog kennels to qualify for the final of what was to be the last ever Kennel Club Breeders Competition. It was a great honour to be invited to take our place in front of a big crowd in the Crufts main arena today, where we were very proud to represent the breed alongside over 200 other dogs from all of the other groups.
The Breeders Competition was in the evening, but prior to that came the breed judging, and the Belatarr boys really did us proud today too. Young Belatarr Hercules was now just out of Junior and in his very first Post Graduate Dog class, where he was placed 3rd out of an entry of 10 – a very nice result which also automatically qualifies him for Crufts 2016.
His big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker was unquestionably the star of the day though, and we were thrilled, and delighted for Jenny and David, to see Charlie awarded 1st Limit Dog from a very classy line up of males.
Billie, Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM, was the third member of our Breeders Team today, and she didn’t go home empty handed, picking up Reserve in another very high quality Open Bitch Class.
Belatarr makes breed history at Boston Championship!
A truly incredible start to the year for team Belatarr with brother & sister taking both Best Dog and Best Bitch today at the Boston Championship Show under judge Jill Peak. Belatarr Charlie Parker was awarded Best Dog and Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM (Billie) took Best Bitch & then won Best of Breed with Charlie Reserve Best of Breed.
Many, many hours later Billie then thrilled us beyond measure when she also won the Gundog Group under judge Aidine Howes – the first and only time EVER that a Wirehaired Vizsla has been awarded Best Gundog at a General Championship show and so the highest show level reached by any HWV in the UK.
We are just so unbelievably proud of Irene & Billie’s historic win and this first for the breed! 🙂
The judge’s glowing critiques for Billie were:
“I was so pleased with the beautiful dogs in this group.
.. my choice for G1 was Belatarr Mahalia Jackson, W/h Vizsla, I was looking for a winner who not only possessed the correct structure but was also sound on the move with good ring presence – this bitch fitted the bill & in addition she was presented in excellent body & muscular condition with a correct wire coat which gave beautiful face furnishings & covered her whole body from the tip of her nose to the tip of her toes. She did not put a foot wrong with her true & steady movement, I feel privileged to have been told afterwards this has given this breed its first group winner.“
Aidine Howes
“3 years old bitch excels in breed type, shown in good coat & condition. lovely head well balanced, good neck & shoulders, good bone, legs & feet, lovely body & balance, good quarters & set on, moved well both ways with reach & drive maintaining her topline. BB & BOB, was delighted to see her take G1 in a strong gundog group.“

Belatarr Boys at Midland Counties Championship
A great day for the boys at the Midland Counties Championship show today, presided over by judge and long-time breed expert, Lindsey Townsend. There was an excellent entry and a lovely, happy atmosphere both in and out of the ring and Belatarr Hercules continued his unbroken run of Championship class wins, taking 1st in Junior Dog. His big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker then went one better, taking 1st in Post Graduate Dog and then, against extremely tough competition, was also awarded Reserve Best Dog.
Welsh double wins for Billie.
Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) continued her fabulous year by taking 1st Open Bitch and Best Bitch at both of this weeks two Championship Shows. Firstly renowned judge Pam Blay awarded her at the weekend’s South Wales Kennel Association Championship Show, and also rewarded her with this wonderful, memerable critique:
“This cracking bitch has come on so much since I judged her last. She is now the finished picture of a typical Wirehaired Vizsla, she has the stance, bone & outlook needed for this breed. She is so balanced that she couldn’t put a foot wrong, she has substance but maintains her femininity, in excellent coat of the correct texture with undercoat, feminine head & expression with a lovely eye & pigment, excellent neck & shoulders with a lovely depth of chest, in hard muscular condition which showed in her excellent, precise movement. Delighted with her progress, no hesitation in making her BB.”
Pam Blay
Just four days later Billie beat a classy line up of HWV bitches at the Gundog Society of Wales Championship Show to be awarded Best Bitch once again, this time under judge Jill Peak.
These two wins now give Billie 6 Championship Best of Sex wins for the year, and all before the age of 3!
Belatarr Boys at Birmingham.
Today was the double show at the Kennel Club HQ in Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. The Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Association holds it’s second show of the year in the morning, whilst the Birmingham Championship Show classes are held in the afternoon, giving a long, but potentially productive day of showing.
The morning show was presided over by judge Marion Wadell and, now 13 months of age, Belatarr Hercules started the day by taking 1st in his first ever Junior Dog class. Shortly thereafter his big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker also took an excellent 1st in a highly competitive Limit Dog Class, also Charlie’s first step up into Limit.
Lovely trophies accompanied both wins – a memorable double for the boys and for Jenny & David.
Traditionally a completely different set of dogs win at the afternoon Birmingham Champ Show, and most followed this pattern today too, but young Hercules bucked that trend and took 1st once again in his debut Championship Junior Dog Class under judge Aideen Howes who’s super critique for Herc was:
“So pleasing in head with good furnishing on muzzle, clean fit neck to shoulder, has good bone, slope to pastern & oval feet, depth through body & ribbed well back, powerful quarters, good tailset, let down in hock, moving well” Aideen Howes
That wasn’t quite the end of proceedings, though, and, having also won the Breeders Competition for HWV’s, team Belatarr then headed off to the Gundog Breeders Group where the two boys, now joined by sister Belatarr Mahalia Jackson, took another 1st place under judge Tom Mather.
Billie makes breed history!
Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) took best of breed and then Gundog Group 4 today at the Newton Abbot & South Devon Canine Society Open show under judge Mark Boswell. This gave her the final 2 points needed for her Kennel Club Show Certificate of Merit, an award that her brothers Belatarr Django Reinhardt and Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie have also both achieved this year. The boys were the first ever HWV brothers to gain their certificates and now with Billie having made the grade too this is the first time ever that three HWV siblings have achieved a ShCM.
Belatarr Best of Breed at Bournemouth.
Dodging endless ominous looking thunderstorms. all of which seemed to break just beyond the showground, Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) scored another memorable win today under breed specialist Mike Lewin at the Bournemouth Championship Show.
Having won 1st in Limit Billie then beat the assembled Champions to take an excellent Best Bitch and was then awarded her 3rd Champ Show Best of Breed of 2014, further consolidating her place as the Top Scoring HWV bitch this year.
