Belatarr Birmingham Big Treble!

A truly amazing day for us at the Birmingham Championship show, presided over by judge and Gundog expert Di Arrowsmith –  Belatarr took a record-breaking Best Dog, Best Bitch AND Best Puppy:

Birmingham triple win

Belatarr North By Northwest taking Best Puppy at 7 months of age.

Belatarr North By Northwest 1st Puppy Dog & Best Puppy, at 7 months of age.

“A very happy baby, up to size already he excelled in skull proportions, forehand angulation, topline & hindquarters. Very balanced on the move for one so young. BP.”

Di Arrowsmith

Belatarr Charlie Parker - 1st Open Dog & Best Dog.

Belatarr Charlie Parker – 1st Open Dog & Best Dog.

“Loved this boy. Typical all through & just as the Standard states, robust & stronger boned than its cousin the smooth Vizsla. He excelled in coat, head & expression, leathers & clean neck. Sound front & on good well padded feet, ideal angles fore & aft, firm topline held throughout the class. Best on the move in this class. A very worthy Best Dog.”

“Substance, bone, type & quality. A grand bitch who I later learned is sister to my BD. She has all his qualities, head planes, eye, expression, leathers, front & feet, heartroom, angles fore & aft & a firm topline in between. In good coat & very good on the move. BB & BOB”

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day North’s sister Ethel, Belatarr To Catch A Thief, also made her (and her handlers!) show debut and was rewarded with an excellent 2nd Puppy Bitch, which also immediately qualified her for Crufts 2016 – Many congratulations!

Immediately following the Champ Show the HWVA hosted it’s annual Open show (in the same ring as the Champ Show classes) and the Belatarr Boys collected another three 1st places, with North taking 1st Minor Puppy Dog, Best Puppy Dog and Best Puppy in Show, whilst his big brother Hercules was awarded 1st Post Graduate Dog and Charlie was 1st Limit Dog. Their brother Kofi took second in Graduate Dog and baby Sabi was a close 2nd to his litter brother North in Minor Puppy Dog, all under judge and long-time breed expert Diane Parry.

Belatarr at Bournemouth.

A super day for the Belatarr babies at the Bournemouth Championship Show… The heat was often stifling, but 4 Belatarr dogs from 3 generations of Phoenix’ puppies took to the ring today, and judge and breed specialist Karen Richardson did us proud.

Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM (Billie) was awarded 1st Open Bitch and went on to take Best Bitch, as she had previously done at the same show in 2014.

Her younger brother Belatarr Scluptor (Kofi) was 1st Post Graduate Dog and went on to take at excellent Reserve Best Dog, whilst, very excitingly, it was also the show debut of two of the newest generation of Belatarr puppies – the Hitchcock litter – as Belatarr North By Northwest (North) and his brother Belatarr Vertigo (Sabi) took to the ring at just 6 months and 2 days of age. Both boys looked terrific and though the heat made concentration and focusing very difficult indeed for them, they both acquitted themselves very well and both managed to qualify for Crufts 2016. Thrilled to have been there to see (and, in Sabi’s case, move) them in the ring 🙂

National Gundog Roundup.

Having not been able to get out to the Champ show circuit since Crufts, way back in Spring, it was great to catch up with everybody and to see the Belatarr babies in action again today at National Gundog. So needless to say I was thrilled to see Jenny’s lovely boys, Charlie Parker & Hercules, win the Brace Class from an entry of 20 pairs of Gundogs – this was only their second ever brace class and their second win out of two!

Their brother and sister, Billie & Gryphon, won the same brace class at the same show exactly 12 months ago too, making this win even more special. Meanwhile, over in the main breed judging, Herc also picked up 1st in Post Graduate Dog:

Most improved today, though, was most definitely Vivien’s handsome Kofi (Belatarr Sculptor), now maturing into such a classy boy with a super, harsh coat and hugely improved movement.

In between judging I also got to get a look at the progress made by young Belatarr North by Northwest (AKA North) just a few days short of him reaching 6 months and less than a week before his show debut – I’m so very pleased with how he is developing and it was wonderful to such positive, free-flowing movement and superb carriage in a 5-month old puppy:

Belatarr at Crufts 2015

A brief day off from puppy duties saw a terrific and very memorable (historic, even!) day for us at Crufts 2015. Belatarr was one of only 6 Gundog kennels to qualify for the final of what was to be the last ever Kennel Club Breeders Competition. It was a great honour to be invited to take our place in front of a big crowd in the Crufts main arena today, where we were very proud to represent the breed alongside over 200 other dogs from all of the other groups.

The Breeders Competition was in the evening, but prior to that came the breed judging, and the Belatarr boys really did us proud today too. Young Belatarr Hercules was now just out of Junior and in his very first Post Graduate Dog class, where he was placed 3rd out of  an entry of 10 – a very nice result which also automatically qualifies him for Crufts 2016.

His big brother Belatarr Charlie Parker was unquestionably the star of the day though, and we were thrilled, and delighted for Jenny and David, to see Charlie awarded 1st Limit Dog from a very classy line up of males.

Billie, Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM, was the third member of our Breeders Team today, and she didn’t go home empty handed, picking up Reserve in another very high quality Open Bitch Class.

East of England Championship.

Hot on the heels of Windsor, the next in the Championship round was today’s East of England show just outside Peterborough. Belatarr’s (somewhat!) more easterly contingent were out in action in the ring today, and young Belatarr Hercules was our star of the day.

Hercules started by winning 1st in Puppy Dog and Best Puppy Dog, maintaining his 100% record – this was his 6th such win out of the 6 Champ shows that he has so far attended. This was also Herc’s final Champ Show as a puppy and so he now graduates into Junior having been unbeaten in all his Champ show classes. His big brother Charlie Parker then took 1st in Post Graduate Dog and the brothers took their place in the Dog Challenge, with Hercules awarded an excellent Reserve Best Dog…not bad for 11 months! Once the bitch judging was complete Herc then lined up against the Best Puppy Bitch and came away with another Best Puppy in Breed award.

Lyra, stacked at 5 months.

Our cheeky little monkey is coming along very nicely, brimming with personality and confidence she also seems to combine the flashiness and movement of her brother Django with her father Mingus’ full-body covering harsh red coat, exactly what we were hoping for!

Now 5 months old Lyra is stacked here at the exact location that we photographed Dad and big brother when they too were 5 months old. She feels very much the baby still, so it’s hard to believe that she’ll be stepping out into the ring for the first time in only a few more weeks…

Belatarr Double Win at the HWVA Champ Show!

Belatarr Mahalia Jackson

Belatarr Mahalia Jackson

Yesterday was a fabulous day in the bright spring sunshine for the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Association Championship Show where an entry of more than 100 HWV’s were presided over by breed specialist judge Doreen Smillie. Tim wasn’t showing so was able to take pics and cheer team Belatarr from the sidelines, and the team most certainly delivered in great style!

To cut a long story short(-ish), Charlie (Belatarr Charlie Parker) romped home winning 1st Junior Dog, along with the Best Junior Dog trophy won by his father, Mingus, 2 years earlier, whilst his brother Gryphon (Belatarr Dizzy Gillespie) was placed third in the same class, qualifying himself for Crufts 2014 in the process. Charlie also beat the winner of the next two classes (Yearling Dog and Graduate Dog) and then the Veteran, Puppy & Junior Puppy winners to be shortlisted down to the final 4 (alongside the much older winners of Open, Limit and Post-Grad) for Best Dog…A fabulous result!

Next up came Charlie & Gryphon’s sister Billie (Belatarr Mahalia Jackson) in the Junior Bitch class, and, not to be outdone, she also took 1st place, qualifying herself for Crufts 2014, winning the Best Junior Bitch Trophy, and giving the Belatarr babies the Best Junior Dog and Bitch double-whammy – cue much excitement in and out of the ring!

Stellar show weekend.

Django’s Saturday rosettes.

Evidently saving their best for last, this very memorable weekend saw three of the Belatarr Puppies excel in the showring:

Django moving for the judge in the Gundog Group.

On Saturday our own Django headed off to the Okehampton & District Open, where he dodged the intermittent heavy rain showers to take Best of Breed & Pest Puppy in Breed under Ms N. Walker, before heading indoors where he scored an amazing Gundog Group 2 & Gundog Puppy Group 1 under judge Simon Luxmoore.  Remarkably this is the exact same result that his father, Mingus, achieved at the same show 2 years earlier, and the third year out of the last 4 that Belatarr HWV’s have been awarded Best Gundog Puppy in Show at Okehampton, following Phoenix’ win here in 2009.  Many thanks to Nige Small for taking these great shots of Django in action!

Django stacked for Best Puppy in Show.

Not to be outdone, the next day saw Django’s siblings Gryphon (Belatarr Dizzie Gillespie) and Billie (Belatarr Mahalia Jackson) head off to the South Wales Kennel Association Championship show.  There judge Mick Howes awarded 1st Junior Dog, Best Puppy Dog and a terrific Reserve Best Dog to Gryphon, and then 1st Junior Bitch and Best Puppy Bitch to Billie, leaving brother and sister to compete against one another for Best Puppy, eventually taken by Billie:

Many congratulations to both, as well as to handler Irene for a job very well done!

Django at 5 Months.

Hard to believe that our little bundle of fluff is now this mature, but Django is now 5 months old and suddenly looking very grown-up. We took the pack to the beach for only the second time since Django’s arrival and a high time was had by all:

A very wet Django concentrating (watching geese, in fact) at the beach....

Completely fearless in water, Django looking slightly bonkers but enjoying a good splash.

Django offers a play-bow to Mingus, who's generally more interested in chasing after gulls in the sea.

...and another...Obviously a new strategy.

Back on dry land and Ears-a-flying in the breeze.

Heading for home.

Stacked on the Tarka Trail, 4 days short of 5 months old.

Hips-Hips Hooray.

Following the extreme weather over the tail end of last year 2011 has (so far) been fairly quiet with not too much excitement here in the Belatarr camp.

Mingus has continued to do very well in his first handful of shows as an adult, and has added another three very handy BOB/BNSC’s to his scores over the last few weeks.

This last weekend also definitely proved to be notable too, as Mingus’ hip-scores & X-ray arrived…actually, they almost didn’t arrive at all since our postie somehow delivered them to the wrong address altogether, but our near-neighbour kindly brought them round (thank goodness!!).

And the scores on the doors were: 4/3 (total of 7), which is an absolutely excellent score for an HWV, and puts Mingus very nicely amongst the best of the breed, hip-wise. Cue happy grins and wags all ’round.

Here he is (nearly)stacked at last weeks Plymouth & District Canine Society Open Show, somewhere between getting Best NSC Gundog and being short-listed for Best Gundog in the group:

Semi-stacked
