North Star.

Huge congratulations to Irene and North (Belatarr North by Northwest) who today took another Best of Breed and also Gundog Group 2 at Torquay & District Canine Society and in so doing gained the final points needed for North’s Kennel Club’s Show Certificate of Merit.

His critique from the day was:

Upstanding male, who is very hard ignore and presents a beautiful picture when standing. Strongly made dog, with good bone and substance. Masculine but not coarse well furnished head, with well set oval eyes giving a gentle expression. Good length of neck, slightly arched leading into well placed shoulders. Deep chest with elbows tight to body. Straight forelegs and good neat feet. Moderately sprung ribs set well back into a short loin. Superbly muscled hindquarters which he uses to advantage to power around the ring with great drive and ever so sound fore and aft. Added to this an excellent wire coat with first class presentation, I could not deny him BOB & G2.

Although only a handful of HWV’s have ever managed to achieve this honour North becomes the 6th Belatarr to earn their ShCM, which is the most, by far, for any HWV Kennel, and also means that all three of Irene’s Belatarr babies have now gained their certificates – a truly outstanding achievement in our breed.

Belatarr wins the SWKA Championship Double

A fantastic day for Belatarr at the South Wales Kennel Association Championship show under breed specialist judge, Bev Smith: Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson was awarded Best Bitch whilst her baby brother Belatarr North by Northwest took Best Dog and was then awarded Best of Breed – making a second time that Belatarr has now won the “Championship Double”.

This was the first ever Champ Show BOB for North, following on from his first Best Dog CC back at National Gundog in August. SWKA is a special event for North too, since he was awarded a sensational Gundog Puppy Group 2 win at the same show exactly 2 years ago to the day!

Huge congratulations to Irene for her fabulous double-win.

The critique for North’s BOB was:

This dog has that je ne sais quoi. He oozes character from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Super head and expression with a soft but intelligent look. Lovely eye shape and colour. Plenty of furnishings giving his head that really striking square appearance in profile. Strong neck of moderate length and slightly arched. Good depth and width of chest giving plenty of heart room. Lovely moderate angulation front and rear. Lovely harsh jacket and shown in good hard condition. Although top size for the breed everything is in proportion as it should be. Excellent outline when stacked and he didn’t disappoint on the move. Foot perfect he flowed with ease around the ring with ground covering movement. When coming towards and away he was straight and true. I was pleased to award him BD & BOB today.

Triumph for North.

At the grand old age of two and 1/2 years (to the very day!) young Belatarr North By Northwest scored a fabulous win today at the National Gundog Championship where breed specialist judge Mike Lewin awarded him 1st Limit Dog and then the Best Dog Challenge Certificate, North’s first CC.

….and, not to be outdone, North’s big sister Billie – Sh CH Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM – also picked up the Reserve Bitch CC (her 5th, to go with her 6 CC’s).

All in all a sensational and hugely memorable day for Belatarr and massive congratulations to Irene, North & Billie!

Championship Show Roundup.

In between all the puppy shenanigans back here at HQ team Belatarr have been enjoying a terrific run at the last three Championship shows.

The Scottish Kennel Club Championship, under judge Anne Moss,  brought  a 5th CC for Sh Ch Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM (Billie) as she was named Best Bitch, and, having just moved up to Limit classes, young Belatarr North By Northwest was rewarded with Reserve Dog CC too. This win makes Billie the second highest awarded bitch in breed history, an incredible achievement, whilst North gained his KC Stud Book number with his RCC, another great milestone for him and Irene.

The following weekend saw the Bath Championship, presided over by judge Blake Crocker, where Billie and North both had a repeat of the same results that they achieved in Scotland, with Billie named Best Bitch and North Reserve Best Dog:

Next up was the Southern Counties Championship, under judge Betty Smith, and this time it was the boys time to triumph, with Belatarr winning all of the top three male classes – Belatarr Vertigo (Sabi) was 1st in a tough Post Graduate class, Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM placed 1st in Limit Dog and Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules took 1st in Open Dog, before going on to be awarded Best Dog and then Best Of Breed. This was a particularly impressive achievement for Herc as, on the way to be named Best of Breed, he needed to beat all 3 of the highest awarded bitches in breed history (including his own older sister, Billie!) who, unusually, were all entered and present in the ring on the day.

Huge congratulations to Jenny, David, Irene and Vivien on all of their achievements with their Belatarr girls and boys, and I’m very much looking forward to joining you all back on teh show circuit once puppy duties have been completed!

Puppies – week 2.

Our new arrivals are now 2 weeks old and the constant rounds of feeding and snoozing have resulted in them roughly tripling their birth weights and generally rolling around contentedly with barrel-like tummies. The pups started lifting themselves up onto their feet this week and by today are just about able to walk (and clamber!) a short distance. At the same time four pups have now opened their eyes – Mis Fawn started the trend 2 days ago, Miss Yellow and Mr Blue joined her yesterday and Miss Orange has just taken her first glimpse of the world today.

Belatarr Boys score at the HWVA Championship.

In the midst of all the new puppy shenanigans this last Sunday was the annual Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Association Championship, always the largest gathering of the breed to take place anywhere in the world. Although we were unable to attend,  due to the considerable demands of our twelve new arrivals, the 5 Belatarr boys who did get to the show managed to score a remarkable clean sweep of all of the top 4 dog classes, as follows:

Graduate Dog: 1st – Belatarr Vertigo

Post Graduate Dog: 1st Belatarr Sculptor

Limit Dog: 1st Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM & 2nd Belatarr North By NorthWest

Open Dog + Reserve Best Dog: 1st Sh CH Belatarr Hercules

1st Spillane’s Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules. Quality dog of lovely type with well made & balanced construction. Interesting to see he has the same mother as my Grad, Post Grad & 1 & 2 in Limit. All with similar qualities & type the sign of an excellent brood bitch. This dog presented a good flowing outline of maturity & was presented in 1 class coat & condition. When moved he covered the ground with ease. RCC.

John Thirlwell

Many congratulations to everyone and we’re looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Herc retains Charlie’s trophy!

Continuing with his sensational show year newly crowned Show Champion Hercules followed in his big brother, Charlie Parker’s, footsteps at the HPR Association’s prestigious show this weekend. After placing 1st in Open Dog and Best of Breed under judge Russell Mosedale Herc went on to be awarded Reserve Best in Show under judge Simon Luxmoore, these being exact same awards that his brother won at the same show in 2015. So the brothers now have their names engraved consecutively on the lovely RBIS trophy! 🙂

The 2 judge’s critiques were also a joy to read:

Stunning boy which excels in profile, medium size, masculine throughout, correct skull shape, oval shape eye & colour, moderate reach of neck leading into well placed shoulders, strong bone, lovely forechest, deep brisket, compact feet, level topline, correct amount of loin, excellent croup leading into correct tailset, moderate bend of stifle, well-muscled with second thigh muscle, correct harsh coat, moved with real drive & reach, BD delighted to award him BOB in agreement of my co-judge & later on to see him get RBIS many congratulations.

Russell Mosedale

My RBIS was the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Spillane’s Belatarr Hercules. I loved his head and expression and he was also shown in good coat and excellent condition. Balanced front and rear he was parallel when viewed from behind and sauntered round the ring with minimum effort and maximum efficiency. I have to mention, apropos no exhibit in particular, that I sometimes wonder just how many exhibitors have ever owned or known a dog that is in really hard muscular condition. Once met never forgotten and it enhances the overall ‘picture’ of the dog immeasurably.

Simon Luxmoore

We were also particularly delighted to be able to see these fabulous shots from the day – the first couple of which really capture something of Herc’s always animated, flowing movement and superb carriage:

Hercules the Champion!

Midland Counties Championship proved to be a truly fantastic and memorable show, particularly for young Belatarr Hercules.

Having moved up into Open Dog for the first time during summer Herc has never been beaten at any of the Championship shows that he has attended, so the stakes were quite high going into Midland Counties.

Following his 1st CC (from Three Counties, in June) and his 2nd CC (from Richmond, just last month) we didn’t truly expect him to win a third CC so very soon, but he performed to his usual impeccable standard and we were absolutely thrilled when judge Valerie Foss awarded him 1st in Open Dog and then that all-important 3rd Best Dog Challenge Certificate – Belatarr’s 2nd Champion in 3 months!

Huge congratulations go to Jenny & David for all of their hard work and persistence as well as their constant eagerness to learn and desire to continually improve. Successful dog showing is an equal mixture of having the best dog and being able to show that dog to best advantage and Jenny & Hercules have grown together into a hugely impressive and harmonious team. We shall forever be grateful that they have truly developed Herc to his full potential from that very exciting puppy that we picked out at 7 week of age, as well as providing Herc & his brother Charlie with such a wonderful, loving and stimulating home.
