Puppy Portraits – The Final Week!

A very big, exciting and emotional time this week as the pups leave us to begin their new lives in their new homes. All ten have already grown into very confident and outgoing youngsters – definitely no shrinking violets amongst them! – and we cannot wait to watch them grow and develop into beautiful adult dogs and bring much pleasure and delight to their new families. So, without further ado, and in alphabetical order…

Puppy Portraits: Week 6.

Last week’s drab and damp weather has given way to a wonderful week of Spring sunshine and the pups have been enjoying being outside every single day this week, where they have experienced tractors and low-flying aircraft and watched pigeons and numerous other birds (and cats) come and go about their Springtime routines.

Monday saw their first attempt at tackling raw chicken wings – an essential step towards the chewing and chomping or raw bones that will mark their adult lives.

The pups (and their now needle-sharp teeth) took to them with huge enthusiasm and quite a bit of curiosity, excited at the prospect, yet unskilled at how to tackle such a large prey item. Approx. 60 mins later they had figured out what to do and all meat had been stripped and consumed and all bones had been cracked and (mostly) swallowed. Time, then, for a long and satisfied snooze for all of the babies. By the end of the week, though, they had all grown considerably more savvy at tackling their new foodstuff, and today’s wings were dispatched within about 15 mins or so.

After many, many hours of watching, stacking and photographing these babies we can also now reveal their new, Kennel Club identities and formally introduce the Belatarr Hitchcock litter:

Puppy Portraits – week 5.

After being spoiled by last weekend’s Spring sunshine and unseasonal warmth we’ve been plunged back into the more typical near-freezing wet and overcast English weather this week. We still wanted to take the pup portraits outdoors, but the poor mites were pretty chilly and less than impressed, and the resulting images certainly don’t have the sunny glow or depth/accuracy of colour that we captured last week. Still, the boys are girls are all coming on very nicely and have enjoyed a lovely week indoors near the fire whilst a succession of daily visitors arrive for those all important cuddles and snuggles socialization exercises. 🙂

Puppy Portraits – week 4.

The last two days have seen some wonderful Spring sunshine arrive in Devon allowing us to get the pups outside to experience the big wide world for the first time. The thermometer showed 70 degrees F in the sunshine and the pups were able to spend 4 hours in the fresh air on two successive afternoons. Sadly the forthcoming weather forecast suggests that they may not have another opportunity to get outdoors again for the foreseeable future, but we were just delighted to see them frolic in the fresh air and were also able to take this weeks portraits outside too.

When indoors and out the pups love nothing more than to pile into one or other of their cat-carrier dens, which have been equally enjoyed by all of their older brothers and sisters before them.

The gang pile into their micro-den.

For the last week we have also been weaning the pups onto their solid food diet. Starting with Royal Canin weaning mousse the kids went absolutely nuts with excitement at their first sniff of the solid stuff and within a few days were lapping very efficiently. From mid-week they were old and tidy enough to be fed from their super-duper Weena-Feeder and by this weekend they have been transferred onto their raw food diet – essentially the same as their mum eats, but put through a food processor to remove all of the chunks and lumps.

Weena-Feeder

Meanwhile teeth are erupting and everyone wants to chew everything, so new rubber chew toys and plastic bottles are going down a treat, when human arms, toes and ears are not available. Their nails are still being filed regularly too, and, when they are sleepy enough, each pup can be gently wiggled upside-down on your lap whilst having their teeny-tiny toes attended to, as beautifully illustrated below by a gently snoozing Mr Blue.

Puppy Portraits – week 3

Huge changes in the pups this last week – they can now see, hear and bark/growl/chirrup (in a comically squeaky way) and have started playing and interacting with one another and with their environment. Nails have been filed twice more and they have quadrupled their birth weight in just 21 days. Phoenix has been producing vast quantities of milk so weaning has not been started as yet, but the little’un’s will get their first taste of solid food this weekend – much mess and mayhem is sure to ensue!

Puppy Portraits – week 2.

The pups continue to thrive and gain weight very nicely and evenly. Day 14 saw Miss Green and then Miss Yellow open their eyes, by the following day, which is when these head-shots were taken, all of their other siblings were starting to open their eyes too.

Pup Portraits – week 1

It’s been a hectic and sleep-deprived 7 days but all the new boys and girls have thrived and all have doubled their body weight in their first week of life. So we can now start our traditional weekly portrait gallery and let everyone meet and then follow the growth, development and changes in each of the 10 pups over the coming weeks:

The Gang’s All Here!

We’re absolutely delighted to announce the safe arrival of Phoenix’ final litter:

Day 1 - 3

Yesterday was a very long and exhausting all-night-and-most-of-the-next-day whelping, but all 10 pups eventually arrived vigorous and squeaking and all suckled strongly immediately, so now, 24hrs later, we are very proud to be able to introduce Belatarr 3.0 to the world: 6 new Belatarr girls – Miss Yellow, Miss Orange, Miss Pink, Miss Green, Miss Purple and Miss Mint, and 4 new Belatarr boys – Mr Red, Mr Black, Mr Blue and Mr. Bronze.

Day 1 - 5

As with Phoenix’ previous litters we have split the puppies into two groups and are hand-attaching them to feed around the clock to ensure that everyone gets their share of milk, so whilst one group feeds the others wait their turn, gently snoozing under the heat lamp. Phoenix is recovering well and sleeping a lot today, but is proving again to be the most wonderful, careful, conscientious and attentive mother. So now the fun begins!

Belatarr: the Next Generation.

We’re delighted to be able to announce that Phoenix, the Top HWV Brood Bitch of 2014, has been confirmed in pup with what will be her final litter:

Some of the new Belatarr babies in development.

For this very special litter we have chosen Fürdöházi Álnok of Amiryck (Cézár) as the sire.

Cézár doing what he loves best.

Cézár doing what he loves best.

Cézár free standing.

24-04-12-cezar3

Cézár is a super example of the breed. He displays the correct, harsh wire coat, has a loving, outgoing, confident and friendly temperament and is very well constructed throughout with an excellent head. He derives from similar lines to our own boy Mingus but also has some of the same physical characteristics as Phoenix, so we hope that they will compliment one another and make for a good match and we excitedly await the outcome. Both parents are HUU tested and the puppies from this litter will not be affected by the Urate Stone disorder. Thanks go to Karen & Richard of Amiryck for giving us the opportunity of using Cézár.

Pups are expected to arrive around 3rd Feb. They will be suitable for show, working and pet homes. If you would like to be considered for inclusion on our list for this exciting new generation of Belatarr HWV’s or you would like to discuss the litter in more detail then please do contact us at: renfromail@aol.com with details of the home and lifestyle that you could offer a Belatarr pup.

Welsh double wins for Billie.

Belatarr Mahalia Jackson (Billie) continued her fabulous year by taking 1st Open Bitch and Best Bitch at both of this weeks two Championship Shows. Firstly renowned judge Pam Blay awarded her at the weekend’s South Wales Kennel Association Championship Show, and also rewarded her with this wonderful, memerable critique:

This cracking bitch has come on so much since I judged her last. She is now the finished picture of a typical Wirehaired Vizsla, she has the stance, bone & outlook needed for this breed. She is so balanced that she couldn’t put a foot wrong, she has substance but maintains her femininity, in excellent coat of the correct texture with undercoat, feminine head & expression with a lovely eye & pigment, excellent neck & shoulders with a lovely depth of chest, in hard muscular condition which showed in her excellent, precise movement. Delighted with her progress, no hesitation in making her BB.”

Pam Blay

Just four days later Billie beat a classy line up of HWV bitches at the Gundog Society of Wales Championship Show to be awarded Best Bitch once again, this time under judge Jill Peak.

These two wins now give Billie 6 Championship Best of Sex wins for the year, and all before the age of 3!
