Introducing Django.

An extremely exciting new chapter opens for Belatarr as young Django joins the pack on a permanent basis!

Django at 10 weeks old.

Following in his father’s paw-steps Django becomes our second Jazz dog, named, as he is, after the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt – although we understand that Tarantino is soon to release his own Django project too.

Belatarr Django Reinhardt - at 7 weeks.

Django also shares his father’s wonderful coat – deep red & harsh – and has a head so similar to Mingus’ that we can’t tell them apart in their 6, 7 and 8 week pics – see below. He’s also very confident, extremely laid back and easy-going, and is already proving to be very keen to learn and eager to train.

Django immediately gravitates to the prime spot on the dog sofa.

Centre stage, flanked by his brothers Gryphon & Charlie Parker.

Spot the difference - Mingus as he was at 8 weeks.

Django shares a snuggle with Fred.

Asleep with his dad on Christmas day.

Until he’s has his second vaccination Django can’t go on the ground in public areas, so, just like his parents before him, he’s been riding around in the baby sling in order that we can introduce him to the wider world. Needless to say, much attention and many oooh’s and aaaah’s follow from onlookers wherever and whenever he appears in public in this way!

It's very frustrating when you can watch your parents running around but can't join in the fun!

Getting to be quite a handful...

Riding in (or more often attempting to wriggle out of) the baby sling.

...he would really rather be hurtling around with all those other exciting looking dogs down there.

Puppy portraits – 8 weeks.

Most of our boys and girls have now left for their new homes but we are still looking after three pups until their new families are ready for them, so our new, slimmed-down puppy-pack are now out and about with us and their parents throughout the day, and back in their whelping quarters at night. The warmer weather has also allowed them to take regular trips outside, several times a day, as well as individual trips in the car and round and about town in the baby sling, just like their parents before them.

Ella Fitzgerald, super-feminine and most definitely her fathers daughter.

Ella, in profile.

Thelonius Monk (Milo) - bad weather prevented us from getting a 7 week head-shot of this handsome boy, but we've managed to crack it this week.

Milo again - such a wonderful, sweet-natured puppy. He's staying on with us until early Jan - not exactly a chore!

The gorgeous Charlie Parker.

Charlie Parker - melting hearts across the land.

Charlie Parker once again.

Charlie Parker with his rather wet & windswept mum (just back from the beach).

Phoenix & younglings.

Mum makes for an ideal cushion.

...and so does Dad.

...and so does Tim's son Fred (or are they forming a cushion for him?)

The dog sofa, the heart of all action, as ever.

It's a waiting game.

Such a stressful existence.

Puppy portraits: Week 6!

The gang have really grown-up during this very busy week – bounding around their run and (when given the chance) the living room, wagging like crazy and giving little puppy barks. They’ve also braved the atrocious/freezing/wet weather to take three supervised trips to “the great outdoors” where, with great confidence and excitement, they encountered such wonderous new things as grass, leaves, herbs, puddles, rain and, of course, mud all for the first time:

Exploration!

Being called back uphill to return home.

Meanwhile Tim started stacking the puppies into their show stands to start to assess their potential:

The Kennel Club approved all of their pedigree names (more of which anon) and we’ve begun the very exciting process of matching puppies to their waiting new homes.

No longer squish-nosed babies, by 6-weeks the Belatarr dozen have become proper young dogs:

Puppies – 4 week portraits.

Hard to believe these little guys have been with us for 28 days, but they’re now 5 times their birth weight and tipping the scales at around 2KG each.

The first teeth (canines only so far) began to appear on Friday, and Phoenix, not un-coincidentally, decided that she would no longer feed her offspring from that day forth. Luckily they are fully weaned now and chomping through 4 meals of raw meat per day. They’ve become quite skilful eaters and make far less mess these days, focussing instead on hoovering up every last morsel and then lying in a big, gently groaning heap whilst their meal digests.

This week saw the cats introduce themselves (to general puppy indifference), a few sessions of swimming in the bath and an increasing delight in running around at full tilt with entire sheets of newspaper in their mouths. The pups were finally able to meet many of their future owners for the first time over this weekend (the initial quarantine period now being over) and so received even more hugs and tickles than usual.

Week 3: Pup Update.

Another huge week for the Belatarr babies – and for Phoenix too whose 3rd Birthday was on Friday!

With appetites growing daily and Phoenix down to just 5 functional teats, we started the process of weaning at 16 days of age, when the puppies still had only limited vision.

As with teaching any new babies to feed, much mess and general hilarity ensued, but all learned to lap on their first day of trying, and by day 20 they had progressed from their starter mousse (which looks and even smells just like Brussels Paté…though no, we haven’t tried it on toast as yet) to their first raw food – the same as the adult dogs get, but puréed for ease of digestion and blended 50/50 with the mousse.

Now, at 3 weeks of age, they are all feeding with what’s best described as frenzied enthusiasm, with Phoenix popping in to top them up with milk every 4 or 5 hours.

Further Weekend Antics…

After spending all of Saturday at a hot, crowded urban dog show, we thought it only fitting to head out to the beach – in this case Crow Point at Braunton Burrows – for some doggy (and human) down-time…

Mingus tries for lift-off using his newly retro-fitted "Helicopter Ears."

After combining forces to dig a huge sand-pit comes a rare moment of stillness.

Phoenix: sandy + wet = happy!

Mirror Phoenix.

Adam commands Phoenix with the power of his Blackberry...

Mingus shows that he can do sandy & wet just as well as Phoenix.

Adam teaches the dogs a new trick...

Freedom!

Now that Mingus is getting on for 5 months old we are finally able to start taking him out for slightly longer walks, and this week – for pretty much the first time – we took Phoenix and Mingus for a few trips out together, resulting in much jollity and frolicking all round (a week of non stop sunshine certainly didn’t hurt either!)

Yippee!!

Huzzah!!

The pack also expanded this week with the arrival of Tim’s son Fred who was down for the Easter Hols., and who, as ever, was seamlessly integrated into the wolf/human hierarchy as we all hit the beaches and the moors.

Mingus Touchdown.

Home!

So yesterday we journeyed far (well, to Southampton) to collect our new little lad. We packed the car for every eventuality, fully expecting howling, vomiting and other bodily expulsions en route home. In the event though Mingus took it all completely in his stride and slept silently for most of the journey, with occasional moments of rousing to check out the passing scenery – a stark contrast to Phoenix who howled and screamed like she was having root canal work for the entire of her 7 hour trip home!

With Adam.

As soon as he touched down in the kitchen Mingus burst to life, brimming with excitement and joy at all the new things to explore. After wolfing down his first home meal, wagging furiously throughout, he raced around like an energizer bunny on overload…so wonderfully confident despite his all-new environment and leaving his siblings behind, a really great testament to how well raised and socialised he has been. Eventually he crashed and burned and snuggled straight into his new cage for a good long snooze – perfect!

Favourite new toy....

....definitely.

Phoenix was beside herself with excitement, but was just too boisterous to play with her new brother just yet. Mingus seems perfectly happy to sleep on his own and settles down without fuss, so the first night went pretty well, punctuated with various trips out to the toilet, but with no screaming, howling or signs of any distress…all quite remarkable!

"Yes?"

So now, after about 24 hours at Wolf Valley, Mingus definitely knows his name, and comes scampering every time you call him. He’s also mastered “sit” pretty quickly, thanks to trusty clicker and reward system. He starts his formal Puppy Gurus obedience training in just over 2 weeks, so we’ve practised a few “down” commands to get the ball rolling. Luckily Mingus seems to have an insatiable appetite, which certainly makes training much easier. He was also weaned straight onto on raw food by Mum Jacqui, which fits perfectly with Phoenix’ all raw diet too.

Sofa snuggle.

Phoenix has become less hyper around Mingus as the day has gone on, which has allowed them to interact properly, albeit under strict supervision, and even enjoy a 3-way-snoozy-snuggle together with Tim on the “dog” sofa this afternoon…

New Kid on the Block!!

So here’s where we finally get to officially spill our very-exciting-and-not-very-well-kept secret news….

In just under 48 hrs our pack will be expanding with the arrival of….

Mingus.

His official name is Morehay Lars of Belatarr, but at home he’ll be Mingus, after the jazz legend Charles Mingus.

Mingus is one of eight puppies born to gorgeous mum Anora (Starshot English Miss for Morehay).  With a Zöldmáli sire and a Ragnolds Dam, supremely elegant, wonderfully fluid in movement and with the kindest of temperaments, Anora is also highly successful in the ring – where we’ve been watching her all through last year. She is without doubt one of our very favourite HWV bitches in the country, and so we were thrilled to be offered the option of pick of her first litter.

Mum - Anora.

The Judges Critique after awarding Anora Best of Breed at Bournemouth Championship Show 2009:

where has this beautiful bitch been hiding, has elegance in spades, very feminine in outlook, lean head, good ratio between skull & muzzle to give that all important elegance & dignity, kind eye of good colour complemented by a super coat in both colour & texture, enough bone for a bitch & neatly constructed to stand easily over her ground on catlike feet, very well handled, elegant on the move, moving on a long, even stride that was deceptively ground covering.” – Chris Guest

Although we were initially looking for a second bitch to accompany Phoenix, when we first visited this litter at 4 weeks of age, we were overwhelmingly drawn to Mingus.

First meeting with a snoozy, 4-week-old Mingus.

A second visit at 6 weeks confirmed that he combined pretty much everything we were looking for in a pup….a perfect coat, lovely head and very promising shape – he even seemed to quite like being show-stacked for examination, quite a miracle in one so young!

Mingus at 6 weeks.

The gang - in "off" mode.

Mingus and his sister Love - both destined for the show ring...but not right now!

So, not long to go now until our worlds are turned upside-down with a whirlwind of training, chewing, yowling, sleep-loss and general cuteness overload all over again – hurrah!

All new arrivals come with stamp of Phoenix approval.
