Belatarr Boys score at the HWVA Championship.
In the midst of all the new puppy shenanigans this last Sunday was the annual Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Association Championship, always the largest gathering of the breed to take place anywhere in the world. Although we were unable to attend, due to the considerable demands of our twelve new arrivals, the 5 Belatarr boys who did get to the show managed to score a remarkable clean sweep of all of the top 4 dog classes, as follows:
Graduate Dog: 1st – Belatarr Vertigo
Post Graduate Dog: 1st Belatarr Sculptor
Limit Dog: 1st Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM & 2nd Belatarr North By NorthWest
Open Dog + Reserve Best Dog: 1st Sh CH Belatarr Hercules
“1st Spillane’s Sh Ch Belatarr Hercules. Quality dog of lovely type with well made & balanced construction. Interesting to see he has the same mother as my Grad, Post Grad & 1 & 2 in Limit. All with similar qualities & type the sign of an excellent brood bitch. This dog presented a good flowing outline of maturity & was presented in 1 class coat & condition. When moved he covered the ground with ease. RCC.“

Many congratulations to everyone and we’re looking forward to seeing you all soon!
Puppies – Week 1.
It’s been a hectic round of feeding and sleeping…and feeding and sleeping…for the 12 new Belatarr arrivals, and now, at the heady age of 1 week, they are all close to doubling their birth weights and are fighting fit and healthy little squeaking ginger sausages.
As is our tradition, we will be posting weekly head-shots of each of the puppies and, in alphabetic order, these are the first entries into their portrait galleries:
THE BOYS
THE GIRLS
and some further general cuteness….
…and then there were Twelve!
We are absolutely thrilled to be able to announce the safe arrival of Lyra’s litter of 12 beautiful puppies, 7 girls and 5 boys who joined us in the early hours of Tuesday, 4th April. Lyra is, as expected, proving to be the most devoted mother imaginable, but still hasn’t lost her own sense of playfulness and joy – just 24hrs after giving birth she was once again excitedly running around with big sticks in the river on a quick break from mothering duties.
As with all of our previous litters the large number of puppies necessitates splitting them into two teams and letting one team feed whilst the other snoozes together under the heat lamp. The teams are then switched round every 90 mins or so, night and day, ensuring that everyone gets an even amount of milk, so much work and disrupted sleep lies ahead!
Forthcoming Litter (Belatarr: the Next Generation)
It is with huge excitement that we are now able to announce the expected arrival of our next generation of Belatarr puppies:
Our beloved Belatarr Lyra (litter sister to Show Champion Belatarr Hercules and full sister to Show Champion Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM) has been confirmed in whelp to HJCh Aldozovolgyi-Drotos Dabas for Morganna.
This is a very long-awaited and carefully planned union that we hope will build upon the strengths that we have established with our hugely successful Phoenix/Mingus litters. With her pretty, feminine head, excellent, balanced angulation and deep red, harsh wire coat with profuse facial furnishings, Lyra typifies the Belatarr HWV. Whilst she didn’t enjoy the show ring she is the most loving and joyful girl you could ever wish for and has already proven to be hugely maternal (she almost co-parented her mother’s last litter!) so we are sure that motherhood will truly allow her to come into her own.
Dad-to-be Dabas brings an exciting combination of great substance in a compact frame coupled with a super, tight, harsh coat along with supplying the genes of his many superb ancestors. He also has the sweetest and most gentle nature you could possibly wish for, and has already sired several of the most promising youngsters in the UK, so it is with great anticipation that we await the arrival of this, our fourth litter, due at the start of April.
Belatarr awarded Top HWV Kennel, Top Stud Dog & Top Brood Bitch for 2016
We are so delighted and proud to announce that:
– Morehay Lars of Belatarr ShCM has, for the second time, won top HWV Stud dog of 2016 (DogWorld/Royal Canin)
– Tarndair Phoenix of Belatarr (below, left) has, also for the second time, won Top HWV Brood Bitch for 2016 (DogWorld/Eden)
– Belatarr has jointly won top UK HWV Kennel for 2016 in the OurDogs/Arden Grange Top Breeder Competition

At Championship shows in 2016 we achieved:
39 x Championship class wins
14 x Best of Sex
5 x Best of Breed
6 x CC’s
3 x Reserve CC’s (all won by Charlie Parker!)
and
2 x Show Champions made-up!
Huge thanks go to the judges and many friends in the breed and at the ringside who have helped make this year such a great joy, and especially to Jenny & Irene for achieving such amazing heights with their Belatarr babies, now Show Champions: Billie & Herc.
Herc retains Charlie’s trophy!
Continuing with his sensational show year newly crowned Show Champion Hercules followed in his big brother, Charlie Parker’s, footsteps at the HPR Association’s prestigious show this weekend. After placing 1st in Open Dog and Best of Breed under judge Russell Mosedale Herc went on to be awarded Reserve Best in Show under judge Simon Luxmoore, these being exact same awards that his brother won at the same show in 2015. So the brothers now have their names engraved consecutively on the lovely RBIS trophy! 🙂
The 2 judge’s critiques were also a joy to read:
“Stunning boy which excels in profile, medium size, masculine throughout, correct skull shape, oval shape eye & colour, moderate reach of neck leading into well placed shoulders, strong bone, lovely forechest, deep brisket, compact feet, level topline, correct amount of loin, excellent croup leading into correct tailset, moderate bend of stifle, well-muscled with second thigh muscle, correct harsh coat, moved with real drive & reach, BD delighted to award him BOB in agreement of my co-judge & later on to see him get RBIS many congratulations.“
Russell Mosedale
“My RBIS was the Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla Spillane’s Belatarr Hercules. I loved his head and expression and he was also shown in good coat and excellent condition. Balanced front and rear he was parallel when viewed from behind and sauntered round the ring with minimum effort and maximum efficiency. I have to mention, apropos no exhibit in particular, that I sometimes wonder just how many exhibitors have ever owned or known a dog that is in really hard muscular condition. Once met never forgotten and it enhances the overall ‘picture’ of the dog immeasurably.“
Simon Luxmoore
We were also particularly delighted to be able to see these fabulous shots from the day – the first couple of which really capture something of Herc’s always animated, flowing movement and superb carriage:

Hercules the Champion!
Midland Counties Championship proved to be a truly fantastic and memorable show, particularly for young Belatarr Hercules.
Having moved up into Open Dog for the first time during summer Herc has never been beaten at any of the Championship shows that he has attended, so the stakes were quite high going into Midland Counties.
Following his 1st CC (from Three Counties, in June) and his 2nd CC (from Richmond, just last month) we didn’t truly expect him to win a third CC so very soon, but he performed to his usual impeccable standard and we were absolutely thrilled when judge Valerie Foss awarded him 1st in Open Dog and then that all-important 3rd Best Dog Challenge Certificate – Belatarr’s 2nd Champion in 3 months!
Huge congratulations go to Jenny & David for all of their hard work and persistence as well as their constant eagerness to learn and desire to continually improve. Successful dog showing is an equal mixture of having the best dog and being able to show that dog to best advantage and Jenny & Hercules have grown together into a hugely impressive and harmonious team. We shall forever be grateful that they have truly developed Herc to his full potential from that very exciting puppy that we picked out at 7 week of age, as well as providing Herc & his brother Charlie with such a wonderful, loving and stimulating home.
Billie the Champion!!
A truly wonderful, memorable day at the National Gundog Championship today under breed specialist Christine Schofield.
Belatarr Mahalia Jackson ShCM collected her 3rd CC for Best Bitch and so becomes Belatarr’s first Champion!
….whilst her litter brother, Belatarr Charlie Parker ShCM also picked up his third RCC for Reserve Best Dog.
Needless to say an incredibly proud day for us and we are so expecially thrilled for Irene and Billie on their great achievement today.
Belatarr Reunion.
This last weekend saw the gathering of the clan as we hosted our 3rd Belatarr reunion. After weeks of daily rain we were incredibly lucky and blessed with unbroken summer sunshine for the entire afternoon. 20 Belatarr Wires were present, together with special guests Oz and Bertie the Labs, Molly the Golden and teeny-tiny Frankie the “Shorkie”. Needless to say much wiry romping in and out of the river and around the garden ensued and it was wonderful, as ever, to see our babies all grown-up and very much enjoying life to the full!
Many many thanks to everyone who came to the day and who braved the holiday traffic travelling back and forth to us in Devon – we couldn’t do it without you all – and particular thanks to Sarah for fulfilling the role of official photographer for the day and for supplying all of these great pics. 🙂
Windsor Brace Win.
Jenny with Charlie & Hercules winning the Dog World Gundog Brace Stakes class (including a decent cash prize!) at Windsor Championship today from a quality line up of entries drawn from across the gundog entries at the show.
This is their 5th Champ show Brace win from the 5 shows at which they have entered the Brace class – amazingly they have never been beaten in Championship brace classes, certainly a first for the breed and extremely rare in any other breed too!
