Bird Dog.

Autumn brings lots of young game bird releases in the woodlands across the river from our garden, and a fair number of these inevitably take up residence amongst our trees and shrubs…or at least they have done in past years.

At Large.

Prey.

Whilst the adult birds are quite capable of looking after themselves, and, in breeding season, regularly take on all-comers, with Phoenix on patrol the garden is now perhaps a rather less favourable place for a young and naive pheasant.

Predator.

Predator.

This was borne out today when Phoenix stalked and then caught her first such game bird, delightedly retrieving the still perfectly intact poult back to Tim.  Sadly a camera was not to hand to capture the occasion…Does this count as gundog work without a gun we wonder?

That’s true! Trouble is it’s the ultra destructive deer we want to go for, rather than the pheasants & partridges…maybe we should just borrow your Deerhounds instead?!

Congrats on the catch, Phoenix. Pretty good work to catch a bird with no gun.

I was idly googling and found your blog – I also have a Vizsla called Phoenix, but she’s shorthaired, 9 years old and we’re on the North Downs in Surrey. I also have two of her pups, Rodin and Solja. They’re a year old on 18th October (how time flies) so nearly birthday pals with your Phoenix.

Yes, three Vizslas! I was only supposed to keep one but couldn’t choose! They don’t have their own blog but I do, if you want to see their pics, go to my blog page:
Puppies, the ultimate test for your fixing skills

The puppies’ tally so far is three bunnies, one of which was a bit mixi so we don’t really count that one 🙂 Hope your hunting goes well, but I reckon you’ll need more than one for the deer!

    regards,
    Alex.

      Hi Alex,

Many thanks for your comment & fantastic to hear about the existence of another Phoenix Vizsla as well as to read of your adventures with your Phoenix’ two pups. Hopefully the days of mass destruction are behind you all now!
